About

The Bowen Technique

What is Bowen?

A gentle touch therapy which has had amazing results for those with back pain, neck pain, migraines and other injuries. Alternative therapies are similar to prescription medications, there are a variety of options out there, you just need to find the one your body responds to. Bowen is another one of those options and is always worth a try if you're in pain.

As someone who suffers from migraines and sciatica pain, Bowen kept me moving and pain free, including through pregnancyNow I hope to do the same for you!

The Bowen treatment uses thumbs and forefingers to press against / challenge and then roll over the muscles at precise points, stimulating soft tissue and nerve endings . We start with the main loading points of your body (and generally the source of your aches and pains); lower back, shoulders, neck, glutes and hamstrings, before adding additional moves depending on what you bring and what we feel within your body as we're working. These moves prompt the body to make the adjustments which help to re-balance, relieve tension and reduce pain.

There is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue. The experience of the treatment is gentle, subtle, relaxing and highly effective.

We touch you very gently, in precise points that have far reaching connections and potential without a treatment that causes pain or discomfort.

Why add Indian Head & Scalp Massage?

Though Bowen therapy is a full body approach, the one area it doesn't cover is the scalp and face. The scalp and hair line have a number of muscles that can hold tension and can cause tension headaches due to stress, anxiety, but also posture.

Equally, aches and pains across the whole body can be caused by long-term stress (cortisol is dangerous!). The Bowen treatment addresses any physical issues, and the Indian Head Massage ensures you leave feeling deeply relaxed, giving your body the best chance of recovery.

What to expect during a session.

  • Treatment can be done on skin or through light clothing, you may be asked to remove heavy or thick garments.

  • You will lie or sit down, depending on the areas that need to be worked on.

  • The therapist uses their fingers or thumbs to apply gentle, rolling movements on specific areas. They’ll mainly use their thumbs and index fingers.

  • The therapist will stretch and move the skin. The pressure will vary, but it won’t be forceful.

  • Throughout the session, the therapist will regularly leave the room to let your body respond and adjust. They’ll return after 2 to 5 minutes.

  • The therapist will repeat the movements as necessary.

  • For Indian Head, client can choose to have the scalp treatment with or without oil.

When your session is done, your therapist will provide self-care instructions and lifestyle recommendations.

Your symptoms might change during the treatment, after the session, or several days later. Sometimes you may feel slightly worse after a treatment, but that's generally a sign you're going to feel amazing soon enough!

Cara is professional and accommodating. She gave the opportunity to discuss particular areas of concern and carried out the treatment in an informative way. The treatment itself yielded positive results for ongoing neck issues.

Melia Pereira

As a Bowen novice, I had no idea what to expect but Cara made everything very comfortable, she explained what she was moving every step of the way and gave my body plenty of time to react and settle after each section. Cara's practice is calm and friendly, and I really felt like my body was respected and listened to. Thank you Cara!

Amy Rollason

I am so glad I got introduced to Bowen Technique, it helped me a lot! I still can feel less tension in my face and especially around my eyes/forehead area, since I have eye migraine and stress related headaches it helped me with that a lot.
